Mascara is a must have item in your beauty bag. It’s used to darken, color, curl, elongate and thicken your lash. Most of all it is used to complete your overall look. It is a beauty crime to spend time creating a master piece with colorful hues of eye shadow and forget the mascara. Why you say? Well unless your lashes are big, full, and dark, eye shadow will tend to make your eyelashes look like they disappeared.
All mascara is made up of the same three basic ingredients: pigmentation, oils, and waxes. It’s this unique ratio of ingredients that make each mascara bottle different from the next. Each company adds their own special combination of ingredients to call it their own. The next thing to take into consideration when buying mascara is the brush. Perfectly formulated mascara is nothing without the right brush.
The shelf life of mascara is 3-4 months so I’ve gone through my fair share of those tiny bottles. If you were unaware of the 3-4 month rule please think back to your purchase date and chuck all the old ones. Keep your brush/wand, rinse well, and keep it with your make-up brushes.

1. Buxom Lash Mascara
Color: Blackest Black
What I Like: Buxom Lash Mascara is formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Pertrochemicals and Phthalates. That alone put it high on the list. My eyelashes look longer as if I put on fake lashes. It did not dry “cakey” and it did not smudge. The wand is the “rubber” kind, which is my favorite.
What I Don’t Like: The liquid is thinner than most mascara’s I’ve tried and therefore gives me an uneasy feeling of putting it on my lower lash. Although my lashes looked longer, it did not provide volume.
Bottom Line: This mascara is great for people with fuller lashes. It will make your lashes long, it will not smudge, and it doesn’t contain all those bad ingredients!
2. Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara
Color: Big Fatty Black
What I Like: It provided my lashes with a deep dark look. My lashes looked fuller.
What I Don’t Like: This brush is enormous! Some may say this is a good thing but I’d rather not spend time wiping mascara from the top of my lid because I missed. Oh and forget about using this on your lower lash. If not done properly, you will look like a raccoon. The formula on this was really thick and did not provide length.
Bottom Line: I wouldn’t buy this again.
3. Blinc Kiss Me Mascara
What I Like: Boy was I excited to try this mascara. It boasts a new technology.. “It’s invented to form tiny water-resistant “tubes” around your lashes for maximum amplification and hold, rather than painting them like conventional mascaras.” So it goes on wet and coats each lash like a tube. It does take some getting use to because this is not like any other mascara on the market. My lashes were evenly spaced, elongated, and fuller. It did not smudge.
What I Don’t Like: The same reason I like it, is the same reason I don’t like it. It coats each lash like a tube. That feels so awkward. My lashes felt fake like plastic. I tested this no smudge formula by simulating tears with Visine eye drops. OMG it didn’t run but boy did it clump together in a hard plastic-like mess. Removing it was another story. I felt like I was losing my lashes but really it was the tubes slipping off each lash. You can literally hold the tubes in your hand when you’re done.
Bottom Line: It makes my lashes feel like plastic however the look is amazing, almost natural looking. I would try it again.
4. Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Mascara
What I Like: It was just okay.
What I Don’t Like: The brush and formula was average. This was hard to remove. I used wipes, oil, and remover but I still had a tough time.
Bottom Line: I wouldn’t buy this again.
5. Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara
Color: Very Black
What I Like: This mascara is my everyday staple item. It gives me longer fuller lashes. The price!
What I Don’t Like: This mascara will smudge if you blink to many times before letting it dry.
Bottom Line: I love this mascara. I can change up my look by putting on multiple coats to make my lashes look dramatically big and long.
6. Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara
What I Like: This brush makes it easy to apply mascara to the outer lash as well as the lower lash.
What I Don’t Like: The brush! I know this is a newer way to apply mascara but this way is not for me. It did not provide any curl. SMUDGE, SMUDGE, SMUDGE! And the price is ridiculous.
Bottom Line: It does make my lashes longer but the work to get it like that something to consider. I will have to revisit this product.
7. Clinique High Lengths Lash Mascara
What I Like: This brush is perfect in getting mascara on all of your lashes. It reaches from the inner lash to the outer lash and even distributes it to each lash. It separates the lash with it’s thin brush to create a natural effect. Add another coat and your lashes will be long and full. Once dry it does not smudge or clump.
What I Don’t Like: Multiple coats are needed to get really good volume. But in doing so, you risk getting clumpy lashes.
Bottom Line: Don’t go heavy with this mascara. A little goes a long way. The brush is perfect in getting those inner and outer hairs. I would definitely buy this again.
8. Yves Saint Laurent Singulier Exaggerated Lashes Mascara
Color: Deep Black
What I Like: The formula went on smooth and dried fast. My lashes were full and elongated.
What I Don’t Like: The brush design makes the application of the mascara uneven. It goes on thick in some spots and thin on others.
Bottom Line: I would use the formula and chuck the brush.
