Jeantrix is a clothing line which originated out of the Philadelphia area. It is run and owned by 2 head designers N¥ce and Hømm. Some of their pieces have been seen on celebrities such as: Terrence J from “106 & park”, Teyana Taylor from “Madea’s Big Happy Family”, Kalenna from Diddy’s Dirty Money, Soulja Boy and many others. I caught up with them to get the scoop on their trendy fashion line.
Mz Mahogany: Who are N¥ce and Hømm?
We consider ourselves to be fashion artists, born and raised in the Philadelphia/Chester areas. We always had an eye for fashion. In middle and high school we both were known for the way we dressed but we didn’t really want to be designers until we left college. In college, we couldn’t find clothing that really expressed who we were when we went shopping, so in 2003 we decided to start designing our own clothing. People began to ask where we got our clothes from and started ordering some for themselves…and the rest is history!
Mz Mahogany: Tell me about the Jeantrix brand.
We create wearable art by using various random materials such as glass, metal, wood, trash, etc. Our clothing brand is based around comic books and superheroes, which is why we love “BAM” and “POW” so much lol. There can be many different stories and chapters in a comic, so all of the items and clothing we design are made to look as if they came straight out of different chapters within the same comic book, grungy with a twist of fantasy.
Mz Mahogany: Using comics in fashion is an interesting concept. Are you marketing your clothes to a younger crowd?
Our demographic is mainly teenagers and young adults aged 13-35. The younger crowds tend to love the eccentric pieces more than their older counterparts.
Mz Mahogany: Any designers you admire?
We admire the edgy, bold, and artistic designers such as Betsey Johnson and Gareth Pugh, but we also love the business sense of the bigger brands such as Ralph Lauren.
Mz Mahogany: Tell me about your ‘Pop Art of War Collection’ collection and your inspiration to create this line.
The inspiration for Pop-Art of War came about from seeing so many news reports about war and many other negative things that are going on in the world. The world needs peace and love right now so what better way to promote peace and an end to war than an entire collection inspired by war, with an artistic Jeantrix twist! Pop-Art of War also premiered during New York Fashion week (s/s 2012) on 9/11, two miles from where the actual buildings once stood so there was immense thought, detail and care put into the show.
Mz Mahogany: What’s your favorite piece?
We chose this piece because corsets have been one of our specialties since day one. The world needs more love and what better way to express love than to actually show it on your clothing! It’s also very versatile and can be styled in many different ways, we love it!
Mz Mahogany: How did it feel seeing your collection on a runway for the first time?
The first time we put our pieces in a fashion show was incredible! We had so much fun doing it that we had forgotten about all the stress and hard work we put into making the clothes. Once the show was over we knew right away “this is what we need to be doing”.
Mz Mahogany: Are you featuring your line in any upcoming runway shows?
As of right now we aren’t doing too many runway shows because we are manufacturing new products and finalizing the ready-to-wear pieces from our Pop-Art of War collection which will launch this spring/summer on our website.
Mz Mahogany: What was the most difficult aspect in launching your own label?
The most difficult part of running any type of company is the amount of work that needs to be done on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. When you’re in school no one tells you that you have to do just about everything yourself when you’re starting out. You have to do your own designing, marketing, advertising, and put on fashion shows which is a whole ‘nother story lol. That is why having a reliable team is very important. In the end hard work always pays off if you believe in yourself and have faith that your dream will come true!
Mz Mahogany: What advice would you give a fashion newbie or student, looking to become a designer?
Our best advice to anyone becoming a designer is to number one be original. If someone already did something don’t copy or recreate it, challenge yourself to create something better! Number two, stay positive. No matter how hard you work if you are a negative person then negative things will come to you. If you remain positive, nice and happy (in every situation no matter what happens) then positive nice and happy things will come to you. Number three, believe in yourself and take yourself and your company seriously. When you believe your dreams will come true you’re already half way towards accomplishing them.
Mz Mahogany: What can we expect from the Jeantrix brand?
In the near future you can expect to see more celebrity collaborations, pieces on various television shows, and an expansion of the company to the mid-west and west coast areas. You can also expect to see t-shirts, jackets, corsets and more accessories coming very soon! This upcoming fall we also plan to return to the runway by producing our next fashion week event God willing…Stay tuned!
