Mz Mahogany: What brought you to the fashion world and specifically to starting your own line?
Lola: While on my visit to my home country, Nigeria during my master’s degree program, I meet my friend making jewelry has a hobby and I got very excited about the craft. Also Nigeria or Africa is known for unique statement necklaces because African women wear them to feel empowered, noticed and beautiful. So I took some classes with local jewelry artisans in Nigeria and since then I have been hooked. My jewelry designs are a combination of the traditional and western world of design to create a unique one of a kind jewelry. I also do a lot of travelling and get my inspiration, designs ideas and source my beads from different cultures around the world.
Mz Mahogany: Do you make your jewelry from start to finish or are you the creative vision behind the design?
Lola: Yes I do I make all my jewelry from start to finish. Well the creative vision lies within me, I am born with a natural talent. Before making a necklace, I make sure that particular necklace design and color is a fashion trend. Then I stretch my designs and make the jewelry with my finishing touch. What can I say, I have fun doing it and keep my clients always happy and make them look different.
Lola: The cream jewel is all about the “dazzling effect.” I love transforming a simple design into a master piece. I was bored of the single or two layer pearls that are common in the marketplace. So I wanted to do something different but at the same that make a woman look “wow,” gorgeous when she wears my piece. It’s been a great seller.
Mz Mahogany: Which is your favorite?
Lola: My favorite piece is “Thalia.” The multi-colors represent joy and a celebration of the summer season. I made this necklace for myself as well and wore it to a wedding with a sleeveless light purple long flowing dress. The wedding represents a celebration of happiness, attached with a dancing girl and sea horse to create a one of a kind look.
Mz Mahogany: How does it feel to be a Fashion Awards MD nominee in the Emerging Accessories category?
Lola: It feels great. I was excited when I heard the news. I am happy my jewelry line is beginning to receive recognition.
Mz Mahogany: What advice would you give a fashion newbie or student, looking to become a designer?
Lola: Find out what you love and what makes you excited every day. Plan out a business strategy, test the market, implement it and give it a shoot. There is no harming in trying; you just never know where it can lead you to.
Mz Mahogany: What can we expect from the Lola Ro brand in the near future?
Lola: I hope to expand to add more accessories to my line such as hand bags. I also would like to see my brand being recognized international and hopefully become the next Chanel.
