Mz Mahogany: Who is Mina Evans?
Mina: I am 24 years old, the oldest of 3 children. I love to have fun but at the same time I am very serious too about my work!
Mz Mahogany: Tell me about the Mina Evans Brand.
Mina: We work with bold colors as well as neutrals and we target women that are stylish and elegant in a subtle and glamorous way. We also have a dress shirt range for the men and this will appeal to the new African men out there who love their culture and heritage.
Mz Mahogany: What brought you to the fashion world and specifically to starting your own line?
Mina: I have always wanted to be in design. My Grandfather is an exceptional artist and my dad and uncle are architects. I just felt more comfortable designing clothes! I knew as young as 7 that I wanted to be a fashion designer and have my own brand, so I just worked towards it.
Mina: My brand inspiration is classic cuts and styles with a key emphasis with embellishments. Our newest collection Terra Firma focuses on our custom-made tie-dye and is inspired by the Earth with dominant base tones of orange, beige, mustard and brown. Splashes of teal and white are added for softness through the use of raw silks and chiffons.
Mz Mahogany: How did it feel seeing your collection on a runway for the first time?
Mina: LOL! I had my fingers crossed that nothing would go wrong and then it was just such a huge relief after!
Mz Mahogany: Which of the designs are your favorite?
Mina: My favorite piece is from the “Jewels & Tulle” collection. It is the ombre blue and white maxi dress and I love it for its versatility. You can dress it up or you can dress it down according to your mood or function.
Mina: I would advise anyone looking to go into fashion designing to build up their knowledge on the fashion industry, know the market they are targeting, know their competition for it is essential in how they’ll brand themselves. They’ll need to brand their business well, ensure their product is up to par and ensure that they are visible to their target market.
Mz Mahogany: What can we expect from the brand in the near future?
Mina: Expect impeccable pieces and excellent service from us. We also expect to do big shows and trade events and increase the popularity in our brand.
Thanks Mina for the lovely interview! Can’t wait to get my hands on those green pants.
