The sun’s out, clouds have cleared, and the heat is on. It’s time to say goodbye to the dull skin winter left and embrace the glow of summer. The question is, is your skin ready?
Summer means more skin, more skin means a bevy of beauty products, treatments, and upkeep to ensure you have fresh radiantly glowing skin. Besides already incorporating shea butter into your life in 50 different ways, what if you only needed one more weapon in your arsenal of beauty tricks? The detoxifying bentonite facial mask!
Known for centuries, and still used today in places of the world such as the Middle East and South Asia, this volcanic clay is rich in nutrients and minerals. The multifaceted clay is suitable for all skin types and is used for many typical skin ailments; clearing acne by absorbing toxins in the skin, removing blackheads, minimizing pores, reducing shine, and even helps in the circulation of cells, thus helping fight against wrinkles and fine lines. Best of all, it is an all-natural product, cost-effective, and readily available in popular health food stores.
All you need is fifteen minutes of your time and you’ll feel like you’ve spent hours at the spa!
The materials needed couldn’t get any simpler: the clay, a non-metallic bowl and utensil.
The non-metallic part is important because metal can interfere with the clay’s unique ingredients, affecting its overall effectiveness.
The rule of thumb is equal parts clay to equal parts water, which for a DIY facial for one, comes out to about 1 teaspoon clay and water.
Once the clay is in the bowl, add the water until you achieve a smooth, paste-like consistency. A few lumps are perfectly fine. If the paste is too runny, add more clay, or just wait a few minutes for the mixture to harden up just a bit.
Here’s the fun part, the application! Either using the back of the utensil or your fingers, apply the clay starting from your nose and moving outwards towards the end of your face. The trick for getting the most out of the clay is the thickness of the layer. Apply a 1/4 – 1 inch thick layer, so the nutrients can really sink in and do their magic! For sensitive skin leave on for about 5-10 minutes, otherwise let it dry for 15-20 minutes.
Wash off with tepid warm water and gently pat dry. Take a look at your skin in the mirror and the immediate difference in the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin will leave you saying, “I’m doing this again tomorrow!!” Pace yourself, 3 times a week is good detox for your skin and a great excuse for an at-home spa day! Glow on and be CHIC!
