Summer is most definitely here folks! Which means you’re taking care to protect yourself in the scorching heat- sunscreen in and on everything (lips, face, skin) and you’ve even given in to letting your hair run au-natural, beachy waves and curls galore. But while you’re letting your protected skin (you’ve been doing the bentonite facial mask after all) soak in the sun, don’t forget to protect your naked hair! To nourish, repair, and even prevent future damage, protect your hair with an extra-virgin coconut oil treatment!
High in saturated fat and rich in lauric acid, coconut oil is a staple in many tropical regions around the world. While it’s a tasty ingredient in many regional cuisines, its usefulness doesn’t stop there. Its emollient nature lends well to its use as a moisturizer, not only on skin but also in hair. The purest form of the oil is extra-virgin, where the oil is extracted from fresh and mature coconut kernels without diluting or altering the oil. This, my friends, is the good stuff.
In its natural state, the high concentration of saturated fat means the oil will usually be in a murky white solid state, hence the reason for it being found in jars. As the oil warms up, it liquefies and it turns from grey and cloudy to a clear and completely see-through liquid
Because hair follicles need protein to thrive, the protein-loving lauric acid found in the oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft and helps prevent and heal damaged hair – whether it’s from too many pool and beach side trips (really, can there be too many??), overstyling, or even chemical processes.
And best of all, being so heat stable, coconut oil is slow to oxidize and turn rancid, lasting up to two years in its solid form; there’s one beauty tool worth the buck and counter space!
Now that you know why you’ll love some extra virgin coconut oil, its time to apply! Depending on your hair’s texture, application of the oil will vary . For my straight to wavy hair beauties, apply to dry hair from root to tip, massaging the scalp to stimulate the follicles and promote growth, and coating every strand. Either tie the hair up in a bun or braid, or even throw on a shower cap. Leave on for at least 30 minutes to an hour, or even overnight (if you sleep in it, make sure to protect your pillowcase against grease stains!). Wash out with your normal shampoo and conditioner. For those with curly, thick hair, you can use the oil as a leave-in conditioner. Your hair will absorb the oil well and leave it shiny and healthy!
And there you have it! A simple yet effective way to protect your mane, and lets face it, giving you more reasons to be and stay outside this summer! Show off your hair’s natural beauty and be CHIC!
