Summer is synonymous with a certain carefree whimsy; everything is about lightness and minimalism. Fall? Fall is for richness, cool brisk winds that nip at your cheeks, and most of all, the need for warmth. Nothing says warmth like lush velvet, a fabric equally synonymous with fall and one that never goes out of style. For this fall, the trend is back, and better than ever. From deep vibrant colors to unexpected silhouettes, designers are reminding us of the timeless beauty velvet has to offer.
Fall is about the colors of the changing season: dark blood reds, royal blues, forest greens, rich blacks, deep aubergines, gorgeous mustards, and vibrant olives. Designers have not forgotten to add these hues to their Fall 2012 runway shows, and incorporating the velvety fabric brings the colors to life.
The silhouettes used with the luxurious fabric start with the tried and true- the long beautiful gown. Gucci stuns with a deep V-neck fitted acid green dress, while L’Wren Scott and Rebecca Taylor add a touch of 1920′s flair to their length and cut. Each designer, however, aimed for a tailored fit that provides shape without body-hugging stiffness. The loose-but-just-right fit allows the fabric to move, and lets the velvet shine.

For something to fit a young woman, or someone who wants a flirtier option to the sophisticated long dress, designers have turned to a cocktail silhouette. These above the knee dresses are short and playful, and are the perfect go-to dress for those holiday parties. Whether sweet and spicy like Carven or a spin on the traditional little black dress like Lanvin, these velvet dresses are structured and fitted, with the crushed velvet adding the perfect touch of elegance.
There’s a twist: designers have gone beyond the realm of the party dress to include menswear-inspired looks: the suit! With matching trousers and jackets, the look is monochromatic and harps back to the 20′s and the 70′s, with 21st century modernity. How? Pops of color like Armani, chunky jewels like Ralph Lauren, and leather accessories like Rachel Zoe. It’s just another way for women to rock men’s fashion.
While the fashionable will no doubt be able to rock the look head to toe, for the everyday chic woman, separates are key. Whether it’s pairing the velvet pants with a silk blouse or even a simple tee for a casual urbanity, or the jacket over jeans or a pencil skirt for simple refinement, the possibilities are endless.

Let’s not forget about the men here! The designers sure haven’t, making sure men are looking preppy in Burberry, dapper in Dolce and Gabbana, and urban chic in Gucci. The looks are subtle yet put together. We have to admit, guys want to have fun too! Jumping in on the velvet trend is a sure fire way to do it!

Whether it’s a casual autumn walk or a day at the office or classroom, the velvet trend will add lushness and subtle drama to your day, and no doubt make you feel like you’re strutting down that runway, looking chic!
