Fall 2012 trends are filled with old school looks making a comeback. The denim on denim trend is no exception. Popular in the 90s and early 2000s, the look was the mark of a fashionista. Looking back, it’s hard to understand the appeal. May we remind everyone of the infamous Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake all denim couple ensemble? Okay, sorry for that painful reminder. But there is no need to write this trend off as a comeback trend gone wrong.
The denim on denim look is working these days. Pairing a denim shirt or jacket with jeans or denim skirt can be a great fashion choice, if done right. First, contrasting shades of denim are always the way to go. A light denim shirt over a dark-rinse jean is enough diversity to attract the eye. When you wear one shade of denim all over the body the outfit becomes plain, boring, and frankly, painful to see.
Second, accessories make an outfit. The denim on denim look is no exception. Be sure to wear feminine accessories to lighten up this tough look. Sparkly earrings, rings, or even a light-colored watch can pull this look together. A fun hat or belt can also add spice to the outfit. For shoes, cute flats or heels can accentuate the outfit. Try to stay away from boots, it makes the outfit look rough and takes away that fun, girly feel.
Lastly, just be daring! It’s important to have the courage to wear denim on denim. Some of us are scarred from its last appearance on the streets and in magazines, but there is no reason to be ashamed. Most of us have denim tops and bottoms already sitting in our closet waiting to be united together. Have the strength to put those bad memories behind you and get ready to embrace the rebirth of denim on denim!
