The word “tar” doesn’t have with it any connotation of beauty whatsoever (tar foundation? No thanks). Yet when it comes to a lip product, the name takes on the best of all connotations; liquid, slightly tacky texture, pigmented, and most of all, amazing staying power. So it’s no wonder that the makeup brand OCC has a line of lip products called Lip Tars; vegan, cruelty-free, and free of parabens and harsh preservatives, these Tars pack long-lasting punch wrapped in social-consciousness.
Touted in an array of colors, from your normal reds and pinks, to ones a little more unusual, like yellow, green, and even black, the Lip Tars play an essential role in the kit of any makeup artist, professional or hobbyist. Le’Cosmetique, an online haven for professional grade makeup products for makeup artists worldwide, carries all 37 of the shades. Besides their range in colors, the Lip Tars contain a few simple ingredients: castor oil, hemp oil, peppermint oil, and vitamin E. Not many makeup brands can say that!
The product itself is highly-pigmented; don’t let the small gloss tube fool you, a little goes a long way ladies!
Applying with a lip brush will allow for perfect application and precise measurements. Most importantly, you’ll avoid staining your fingers. Halfway between a lipstick and a lip stain, Lip Tars smear and fade with a kiss or a drink of water, but maintain a powerful underlying grip of color on the lips. The only way it is coming off is with makeup remover! The product itself can be a little streaky, so a lip brush is essential in smoothing out the pigment.
Opaque and liquid, Lip Tars apply like gloss and end in a semi matte/satin finish.
Wearing alone or mixed, the key is to pick at least one color you would normally purchase as a lipstick or gloss. Demure, a vibrant hot neon fuchsia with undertones of purple, is one of these great colors. Paired with a neutral white base such as Feathered, the different color combinations are endless.
And now for the fun part, experimentation! Either using the back of your hand or a small dish, apply as little or as much of as many different colors as you’d like. The custom concoctions can be stored in containers so you’ll always have that perfect shade at a moment’s notice.
Before you bring that lip brush to your lips, make sure your lips are prepped! While the products themselves contain moisturizing ingredients, the matte satin finish can still settle into lines and flakes. The solution? A quick swab of lip balm or even scrubbing your pout fresh.
Smelling vaguely of your average standard lip product, the key to a non-streaky and non-cakey result is blotting. Apply one layer over your balm, blot with a tissue, and reapply. Like mascara, the more layers you apply (blotting in between of course!) the more pigmented your lips will be, regardless of the shade you end up with. If a more liquid finish is desired, finish with some more balm or your favorite pair of clear gloss.
Available on Le’Cosmetique for $15 a tube, Lip Tars are sure to be a staple in your makeup arsenal and will last a lifetime. And with all the different combinations out there, you’ll be sure to look CHIC for any occasion!
