I have a confession to make. I wear leggings as pants. Yes, I wear leggings frequently and I have zero regrets. I can feel the judgment already, but I have no shame. I have worn leggings for years and will continue to wear leggings as long as I live. My mother might be partly to blame. As a little girl my outfit to school was usually a dress and a nice pair of leggings. Ever since then I have been a faithful leggings lover and will never abandon my love despite the hatred we encounter.
“Leggings aren’t pants” or “leggings aren’t for adults” have been heard time and time again by my leggings and I. Yet I have nothing less than adoration for my trusty leggings and why should I? They’re comfortable. I can lounge around with ease. I can dress them up and I can dress them down. They tuck in nicely into boots and look great with a leather jacket. And I can’t deny I have thrown on leggings and an over-sized sweatshirt more times than I can count. However, I haven’t worn leggings as an outfit staple for as long as I have without learning some essential Do’s and Don’t’s.
Wear leggings with a shirt longer than the waist: Leggings are form-fitting and can easily become unattractive to innocent bystanders. Avoid unsightly wedging in spots not meant for the public’s eyes with a shirt that goes past the waist. It covers up anything that might go awry and keeps the outfit smooth.
Wear leggings made of thin material: In leggings world the thicker the material the better. It makes them more like pants and that’s the whole point.Thinner material make leggings seem more like tights. And no one likes to see tights as pants (notice how few debates on tights as pants for this very reason).
Layer up. It’s especially important in winter to add some layers to leggings. Wearing a pair of tights underneath adds warmth and more material coverage.Tights on their own is a fashion sin but underneath leggings it’s the perfect extra layer of warmth. As noted before, the thicker the better and tights add that extra bit of coverage.
Be afraid to go bold. Although it might seem safer to new leggings wearers to only stick to neutral tones it’s okay to get creative. Bright colored leggings can be fun and look great with a basic top.
Leggings can be chic. They’re comfortable, versatile, and shouldn’t be feared. There are some precautions to take but once they’re in effect feel free to let your inner leggings lover run free. I know I will.
