There have been several cultures to dabble in headgear (no we don’t mean braces) and convert the trend into their traditions.
The 15th century ferronière was a popular trend that began in Italy as a precious stone that was suspended in the middle of the forehead and held in place by a ribbon with the purpose of holding the hair in place. This fashion trend was depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of La Belle Ferronière, which is how the trend gained its name. The ribbon was later replaced with a chain when the trend reemerged during the 19th century.
Indian brides traditionally wear Maang Tikka’s and Matha-Patti’s but they have begun to make their way into less formal occasions. They have even been spotted on the forehead of celebrities – Alicia Keys.
The beaming bride wore a custom-made, Grecian inspired one-shouldered silk Vera Wang gown with crystal detailing, a dazzling diamond necklace headband, custom made by Jacob the Jeweler, and jewel-encrusted Christian Louboutin sandals accented her feet.
It can be custom made of diamonds, rubies and emeralds as well as other precious and semiprecious stones for the bride on her big day. The maang is a single chain that is worn forwards in the center of her parted hair that allows the tikka, the jewel centerpiece, to hang in the center of the forehead. The matha-patti is another bridal headdress worn with the tikka hanging from the center, much like the maang. The more formal the event, the more elaborate and decadent the design of the Maang Tikka or matha-patti will be.
Head Chains, more commonly known as Gypsy Headbands, have made their way down a few runways displaying Boho inspired collections, including House of Harlow by Nicole Richie.
It even made an appearance in the 2012 Miss USA Competition photo-shoot themed ‘Roman Goddess’.

In my pastime of people watching, I have noticed the trend completing the look of fashion defining divas across D.C.. I personally love the look. But I’m interested to find out what the rest of our CHIC readers think. Take our poll and tell us what you think!
