After two years of being off the fashion scene, the disgraced French fashion designer, John Galliano is getting a second chance to make amends with the industry and consumers worldwide. Vogue magazine reported Friday that the designer would be making a comeback to the industry with a three-month residency at Oscar De La Renta’s New York studio in preparation for the upcoming New York Fashion Week in February.
Two years ago, the British designer left his own label and was released as the creative director of Christian Dior after a video went viral of the designer making racist and anti-semitic comments in a Paris cafe.Following the event, Galliano issued a statement to the press saying , “I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people’s understanding and compassion. To start this process I am seeking help and all I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people’s forgiveness.”
Well it seems as though Galliano’s hopes have come true. After undergoing rehab for alcohol and drug addiction and trying to make amends with everyone whom he offended, Galliano has been given another chance in the industry with long-time friend and admirer of his work, Oscar De La Renta. When asked about his position regarding giving Galliano a position with his fashion house, de la Renta responded, “ He has worked long and hard on his recovery, and I’m happy to give him the opportunity to re immerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative.”
In response to the news, many prominent figures in the fashion world expressed their excitement of Galliano’s return including Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman who tweeted, “This is terrific” and also told Vogue, “Oscar de la Renta is the king of uptown style and John Galliano the prince of romantic glamour, so it should be a magical match. I am delighted John’s returning to fashion.” Elle Magazine also excitingly posted, “You’ll never believe who Oscar de la Renta welcomed to his NYC studio!
The fashion industry was not the only to support the welcoming of Galliano back into the fashion gates, The Anti-Defamation League, responsible for the monitoring and fight against Anti-Semitism , also stated about his increased efforts to “ learn from his remarks about Jews, Hitler and the Holocaust.”
What is your opinion on John Galliano’s return to fashion? Do you think he has truly learned his lesson, or do you believe that this is just a cover-up to get back in the industry?
