Beauty tips and advice come from everywhere! But how do we know which ones are really important? Here are a few tips the Mz Mahogany Chic staff use to stay up-to-date with the latest beauty trends.
Stand Up Straight
Seriously, do it. Many of us fall guilty to slouching and leaning on things, especially if we are sitting down most of the day, but it’s important to keep your back straight. Having good posture makes you look taller and leaner, especially during those days when you’re not feeling too great about your body.
Standing up straight exudes confidence and gives you that boost that you need. Something that can help you at work is getting one of those big balls that you use when you work out and sitting on it for a few hours a day. You can also pretend that someone is pulling your head up by a string, kind of like a marionette, and it will help you stand up straight.
Remove Your Makeup Before Going to Sleep
This one is really important! Many of us put on makeup for fun, to accentuate our favorite features, or to cover up some blemishes and imperfections. If you have makeup on the whole day, as in foundation, bronzer/blush, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, so on and so forth, this can be too much for your skin. Your pores need to be clean so that your face can be acne and spot free.
I like to keep makeup remover wipes on my nightstand for the nights where I get really lazy to wipe away makeup and dirt. I also have facial wash and toner to use once my makeup has been removed. It’s important to have a “step program” for your face, as in was, toner, and moisturizer, one to two times a day. The toner may be a bit tough on sensitive skin to use twice a day, so find the right beauty program for you. For this, I actually like going to beauty stores and asking someone for help to find the right products for my skin.
Clean Your Makeup Tools
I like to do this about once a month. It’s You can buy the cleaning solution at a drugstore or a beauty store or you can make your own. I actually like to make my own. What I do is I grab a big bowl and pour warm water in it. You don’t want it to be too hot or too cold or it’s too harsh for the bristles of the brushes. Then, once you have enough water for your brushes, squeeze some shampoo in the bowl. I like to use either baby shampoo because if babies can handle it so can my makeup tools, or some tea tree shampoo because it’s sensitive yet gets the dirt out, just like for your hair.
After that I grab my brushes and put them in the bowl and start rubbing them with the shampoo, and you will see all the makeup start mixing in with the water. Once you are done with that, rinse your tools in colder water, to get rid of any makeup that was left. Lastly, get a paper towel and put over anything that will elevate it so that you can put all your brushes on top of it at an angle. This will help it dry up and leave any leftover makeup on the paper towel.
At-Home Remedies for Hair
I have heard and tried a few at home remedies for many hair problems. One of my favorites, not just to eat, is olive oil. During this time of year, when it’s really cold and dry, my skin and hair tend to follow along and get really sensitive and dry, which is why it’s super important to constantly moisturize. With olive oil, I like to make a hair mask and let it sit for a few hours wrapped around my towel, and then rinsing it out in the shower and following it up with usual hair washing routine. I have also heard that putting eggs, vinegar, aloe vera, and for those of you past drinking age, beer! Who would have ever thought that pouring beer on your hair and leaving it for a few hours would actually be beneficial to it?
Taking Key Vitamins and Supplements
Nowadays, depending on how busy you are, you barely have time to eat the right meals to give you the energy and nutrition you need. Your nails may be brittle, your hair may be easy to tangle or break, and your skin just isn’t glowing as you’d like it to. I like to talk to my doctor and ask what vitamins and supplements I can take that would be a good regimen for me to take daily. Obviously this changes for everyone which is why it’s good to talk to a professional to have a more expert opinion. Usually a multivitamin is really good because it has most of what you will need in one. I also like to take B12 or any other B vitamins for hair, and fish oil, both key to the nervous system. Your body may need different types of vitamins and supplements during different times of the year so be sure to always consult with your doctor about what to take.
Get Enough Sleep
I know there are many nights when sleeping is really difficult to do. We stay up to study for an exam, we are out at a party, we’re nervous about something that is happening the next day, but honestly a full night’s sleep is a big help to our body. When you sleep at least seven hours a night, you feel more energized, better rested and ready to take on the day. It becomes easier for you to remember things, such as answers to questions you know will be on the exam. Also, when you are well rested, you can see it on your face. Do you ever get the question, “You look so tired, are you okay?” Yup, others can see it all over your face when you don’t get enough sleep. I usually have two flat pillows under my head when I sleep to keep my head elevated so the blood circulates, which in turn helps with under-eye puffiness. If you are having a tough time falling asleep, try doing some stretches to relax your body and get it ready for a restful night. See if you can tell the difference!
Exercising is one of the best things for your body. There are so many different workouts, from cardio, to dance, swimming, yoga, you name it. You will be sure to find a workout that you like and fits your needs. The most important part is getting started, and once you know which workout is best for you then it should be easier to keep up with. Something that is really important to help you stay on track of your workouts is finding a workout buddy. You can keep each other motivated and feel really good about it. Working out releases endorphins, which basically means working out makes you happier. This can help with feeling positive about yourself, eating healthier, and getting enough rest to wake you up energized and ready to take on the day.
None of the tips and advice above will matter if you’re not drinking enough water. Staying hydrated will help cleanse your body and give you energy to keep going. If you’re not hydrated, your skin suffers, but not only that, your body suffers as well. It becomes more difficult to work out because you may get tired more easily and even dizzy. We always hear about doctors telling us to stay hydrated, especially during the warm weather. With temperatures slowly but surely heating up, it may be a good idea to get your body used to drinking enough water. A good way to determine how much water you need is based on your weight. Someone who weighs 160 lbs may need more water than someone who needs 120 lbs, and that is completely okay because our bodies are all different.
