There’s nothing more palpable than pure, unadulterated passion; work passion that is. It couldn’t be more apparent in DC-based makeup artist Dina of Dinechka LLC, who’s taken her childhood passion and turned it into a successful jet-setting business.
Although established in 2009, Dinechka’s creator Dina has been licensed since 2004, and has been working in the industry for over a decade. How did she start, who has she worked with, where can you see her work; we found out all this and more as we caught up with the talented makeup artist.
When did you know you wanted to become a Makeup Artist?
Dina: My mother was actually a makeup artist; I grew up watching and helping her transform her clients. I remember being in the hotel suite before a wedding and assisting my mother like a doctor with his assistant, passing her whatever supplies she needed. When I started, I honestly already knew how to do it from watching her for so many years.
What inspired you to become a Makeup Artist?
Dina: When I was old enough to apply, I did and got accepted with Prescriptives cosmetics. They paid for my schooling and licensed me right away. This was back when it was required to be licensed. [Currently] the state [has] removed that requirement. I think it’s not very safe since makeup artists are working with skin, and many don’t know the importance of hygiene and cleaning/disinfecting brushes. That is why I started to teach makeup classes.
What inspires you as a Makeup Artist today, from the world of fashion, art, and culture?
Dina: Honestly, I just loving making women feel prettier and gain confidence. It makes me feel good. For creative shoots, I get most of my inspiration from nature.
Can you tell us a little about your accolades?
Dina: [Recent awards include] 2012 Fashion Awards MD Best Commercial Makeup Artist; 2012 RAWards Makeup Artist of the Year, Cover of Shy Magazine, including inside corresponding spread, and 50 Cent SMS Audio Headphones commercial.
What is your dream for your business? What do you envision for the future?
Dina: I have already reached my dream for my business; I have expanded to NY and LA! I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to share my work. In the present and future, I have started hiring interns and contractors to be able to provide my services simultaneously in different cities. This year I hope to expand to Chicago and Atlanta.
Now let’s talk makeup! What’s the one thing every woman needs in her makeup bag?
Dina: An eyelash curler!
What’s your go-to makeup for a casual look? How about a night out?
Dina: For a casual look, I like to go for Kim Kardashian: I just do a lot of highlighting and contouring, mascara and a bare lip. For the night time, I love a smokey eye and a pink-nude lip, with a golden-shimmer gloss on the pout of the lip.
What’s the biggest makeup no-no a woman should avoid?
Dina: Stop keeping makeup forever! Mascara should be replaced every 3 months. Try to toss old lipglosses and products, all that gunk absorbs bacteria over time.
Do you have any favorite makeup products?
Dina: My favorite individual products are: Makeup Forever Camoflauge Concealer, Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara, Ben Nye Banana Powder, and Ulta Lipstick in #224- Coffee Break.
With spring just around the corner what is the biggest spring makeup trend you are most looking forward to?
Dina: I can’t wait for the colored-eyeliner trend. I’m so tired of black!
What fall/winter makeup trend was your favorite this season?
Dina: I loved the orange lips!
Whether around the DMV, or on a plane coming to a big city near you (she was recently shooting a Land Rover ad in Hawaii!), Dina is steadily growing Dinechka LLC, and we at Mz Mahogany Chic can’t wait to see her continued success!
