Many girls dream of getting a CHIC fashion related job. Fashion Stylist Nicole ‘Cola’ Alston, a Baltimore native, lives that dream everyday. Nicole began her career in 2010 after gaining experience styling for photo shoots. She now spends her time creating high-fashion looks, styling commercial photo-shoots assisting in closet clean-outs, providing personal shopping services, styling clients for day/evening looks and more. Her work was featured in Vogue Italia and at Curves Rock Fashion Weekend covered by WBAL Television.
Nicole’s interest in fashion began at the age of 15. Her mom introduced her to thrift store shopping. Through her unique and inexpensive finds, she began creating looks for friends and family. In college she perused fashion photography and later began to peruse fashion styling.
As a 2013 Emerging Stylist Nominee for Fashion Awards MD, Nicole is making her mark in the industry.
We contacted Nicole to get the details on her career…
Mz Mahogany Chic: How did you get interested in fashion styling?
Nicole: My styling interests came about in 2010. A friend asked me to style a photo shoot using my accessories and the models shoes – That was three years ago! I had no idea what it really meant to ‘style’ until then. I’ve styled ever since.
Mz Mahogany Chic: What are some highlights of your career?
Nicole: Some highlights of my career would be doing Vogue Italia and styling an entire fashion show by myself.
Mz Mahogany Chic: What is the greatest challenge of being a stylist?
Nicole: The greatest challenge is working under pressure. I love last-minute tweaks and making people look great. Getting the job done is a challenge in itself. Creating an image takes more effort than what people think.
Mz Mahogany Chic: How do you promote your business?
Nicole: I promote online using social media sites like Model Mayhem and Instagram. I also promote in person. Networking is key, attending events and getting to know others in your industry is important.
Mz Mahogany Chic: What is your favorite type of look to style?
Nicole: My favorite look to style would be high fashion. I love the look because it’s so timeless.
Mz Mahogany Chic: Any tips for our readers wanting to pursue a career in fashion styling?
Nicole: The only tip I would give is be yourself. Nobody can be you better than yourself. Don’t let this industry turn you into something that you are not.
