If you’re anything like me, this influx of weather has been wreaking havoc on your normally beautiful and well behaved skin. There’s only so many times you can test out a new moisturizer before you become completely fed up. So I decided to take it to a Pro! Chic readers, I had a chance to sit down with celebrity make-up stylist Frederick Sanders and chat about transitioning into summer skin care, shopping for products in the drug store vs. department store, some of his favorite clients to work with, and much more.
Naté: Now that it seems that like our seasons have finally changed and the high temperatures may be here to stay, what is the simplest way to give our cosmetic bag a makeover?
Frederick: Less is more. Stay away from cake-y foundations and heavy powders. Instead use light, sheer, tinted moisturizer; fun colorful glosses. Mascara is a winner in any season!
Naté: For those of us who tend to have more problematic skin, such as combination/ oily skin, how do we transition our skin from winter to summer?
Frederick: Always make sure you use good skin care for combination oil skin. Tinted moisturizer are perfect. They have the quality of both a moisturizer and that of a foundation. My personal; favorite is made by YSL. It has been my favorite for years because they have a good selection from color on to skin care.
Naté: What is the difference between a tinted moisturizer and a BB cream?
Frederick: A BB cream is more of a treatment. A tinted moisturizer is more of a level one. With a BB cream you have double the treatment and double the pigment.
Naté: Is it REALLY necessary to buy your skin care basics like cleansers, toners, moisturizers with SPF, concealers and foundations from the fancy counters at the department stores?
Frederick: All of it is good, but it depends on what works best for your skin. It cost more in a department store because you have someone to help guide you through it. In a drug store you don’t have anyone to assist you through it.
Naté: What has been your biggest struggle in the beauty industry?
Frederick: There’s been many while proving myself so I can advance. It’s about who, not what you know.
Naté: Who have been some of your favorite celebrity clients to work with?
Frederick: India Arie she so personable, once she opens up to you it’s an amazing friendship. Another is Dorenda Clarke Cole. I especially love her because she’s so mothering.
Naté: What is it about making people over that makes this profession the best above all the others?
Frederick: Because for me it’s more than just making someone pretty but it’s about making some feel beautiful and building their self-esteem.
Naté: Before you go, you must share a peculiar family secret; make up application tip or something. Do share!
Frederick: I am the youngest and the only boy, so it helped grow my love and excitement for make-up. Always use good clean makeup brushes.
Naté: So does that mean you clean them each time before you use them?
Frederick: You should. Shampoo them at least once a week if you use them all the time!
