Applying lipstick seems like a pretty easy process, but there are a few key steps to making sure it looks good and lasts a little bit longer!
First step is to prep your lips by exfoliating them. You can do so by applying an exfoliating cream and rubbing it on your lips using either your finger or a toothbrush, very gently. Once you are done scrubbing away the dead skin, wipe away any excess with a soft towel or tissue. Check out our Sugar Lip Scrub recipe and method.
Now that your lips are baby smooth, add a bit more smoothness to them by applying chap stick, or vaseline to just make them a bit softer.
The next step is to line your lips with a lip pencil. This helps define your lip shape and helps the shade last longer. Make sure you pick a lip pencil in a shade as close as possible to the lipstick that you will be using. You don’t want to just line your lips and leave it a completely different color on the inside, unless of course you are going to a ’80s party!
Once your done lining your lips and softly shading in the color, it is time for lipstick! There are so many colors and shades of colors that you can choose from. Some popular colors that are always a favorite are red, orange, purple, pink and nude. After applying two coats of lipstick make sure you dab it on tissue to blot out the excess color. Another trick to make sure lipstick doesn’t get on your teeth is to stick your thumb in your mouth and the excess lipstick will stay on your thumb. This removes the likelihood of having those embarrassing lipstick stains on your teeth!
You can apply the lipstick straight out of the tube, but for a more precise application you can try using a lipstick brush or maybe even your fingers!
If you want to give it more of a glossy shine, you can add lip gloss to it! I prefer to add it in the middle of my lips to give it more of a natural shine.
Another way to define your lips is by adding illuminators or highlighter directly above your Cupid’s bow and right below the middle of your lower lip. Using highlighter and bronzer is a way contour your face, but you can do it just for your lips as well!
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors!
- You can buy the cheaper lipstick and try different shades before you commit to a more expensive brand
- There are different types of lipstick and stains that you can try that work best for different people
- You don’t have to match your lipstick shade to your blush shade
- If you are going to do a bold lip keep the rest of your makeup, especially eyes, more simple
The most important tip is to have fun and be confident in yourself! If you put on lipstick but don’t feel confident or want to smile, then what’s the point? You being bold with lipstick can inspire others to make fashion and beauty risks they will be proud of!
