Mz Mahogany Chic, media sponsor of the 2013 5th Annual DC RAWards, is giving you a taste of Christine Walters; the semi-finalist for the Performing Artist of the Year category. We had the opportunity to talk with Christine to learn how she incorporates fashion into her performing art exhibits.
When did you get into the Performing Arts genre?
About two and a half years ago. Music is necessary to me. It really keeps me up and going. First I started painting with acrylic then I began to evolve.
What is your favorite type of art?
I love abstract art. I love to incorporate live DJs, fashion, music and photography into my art performance. I hand select all of my DJs and create multimedia displays. I usually document and film them. When people hear sound at my performances they see pictures and shapes. The audio paints the picture to the person that is at the performance. Music is important to my paintings and also to paint that right picture.
Who is your inspiration?
Jackson Polick, whom is a performance painter (focuses on drip painting). My stepdad is my inspiration. He has always supported me and encouraged me to express myself.
How do you incorporate fashion trends into your art?
It really depends on the music. I have performed Opera of Madam Butterfly and dressed in a Kimono with full make up. My next performance in London will include a faux leather cat suit; which is sexy and hot. I try to dress according to the art show and get into character.
Why should the RAWards judges vote for you to represent DC in Hollywood?
I bring art to visual art. Most people are scared to show that in their work. Artists should not be afraid to make mistakes and show other artists that it is ok. It is ok to use the best you have and never doubt yourself as an artist.
