Mz Mahogany Chic, media sponsor of the 2013 5th Annual DC RAWards, is giving you a taste of each semi-finalist. Meet DeSerge, semi-finalist in the Visual Artist category.
In what way, if any, has your art influenced your style and sense of fashion?
Being an artist, you have to understand how colors work with each other, how they mix, and how they complement each other, the same holds true for fashion. When you get dressed you have to think about it the same way, if you have too much of one color, if two pieces complement each other, if this jacket works better than that jacket. It is the same kind of thinking when painting or coloring on the computer.
How do you portray beauty in your art? Do the same perspectives hold true in reality?
Beauty is a very subjective concept, hence the cliché “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. So what one finds beautiful, someone else may find it ugly. When it comes to doing my work, if something looks good whether done unintentionally or on purpose, to me that’s beauty. In life the things that happen when you least expect it, are usually the most beautiful.
What is your opinion on the general portrayal of beauty in media and fine arts?
There’s always so much controversy of how “beauty” is portrayed in the media. To most people it’s very subjective, to the art world, the fashion world, they’ve painted this picture of a tall, slender, clear skinned, almost perfect model, which nowadays we know not to be true with all the advances in technology, before and after photos, that you can’t almost believe they are the same person. So “Beauty” in the media is very misleading.
What words of inspiration would you give to an aspiring artist trying to make their way in the world?
Don’t lose focus, stay as humble as possible, work on your craft, challenge yourself, and don’t doubt yourself.
Tell us why you deserve to be Visual Artist of the year.
I deserve to be Visual Artist of the year because I’ve matured my craft and it’s only going to get better as I stay persistent and focused, and I’m ready to begin making my impression. Thus far I feel good about being a RAW Artist, I’ve learned a lot about myself as an artist since becoming a part of the RAW family. All of the artists have worked hard to get here, we all deserve to be Visual Artists of the year, but I’m ready, and bound to leave that lasting impression.
