Mz Mahogany Chic, media sponsor of the 2013 5th Annual DC RAWards, is giving you a taste of each semi-finalist. Alison Carney, semi-finalist in the ‘Musician of the Year’ category, discusses her beauty, life and love of music with us.
Describe your music style
Electronic meets soul! I enjoy space like sounds. I have been toying with that for a few years and it feels really good now.
How do you get people to relate to your music?
I try to get with music friends; we call it “Honest Music”. It is relatable music that comes from the heart and a good place. People can relate to my music because I talk about love and being a woman. Usually my listeners are ages 18-mid 30s.
In what age group do you find most of your fans originating from?
I try not to put my music in a box regarding age. Usually the age group is ages 18-mid 30s. Teenage women can also listen to my music. I am relatively young but I try to incorporate everyone. I like to talk about my evolution as a woman. I look at myself as a woman first then an artist.
Is there a situation or person that has played a role in your music style?
I try to use situations and processes that I have gone through in life. I was straight R& B Soul at first but I was not making any milestones. I felt I wasn’t being honest with myself and I love “Honest Music”. I write my music in different places like my bathtub or even my car. Personal relationships have impacted my music good and/ or bad. I like to base my music around my circumstances and surroundings.
Who are your favorite musicians?
I am a die-hard Prince fan! I love Prince. I am also a James Blake fan; J*Davey, Little Dragon and M 83.I love music that can change my mood. Electrifying sounds are interesting to me. CocoRosie is an artist that uses that type of sound. She uses children’s instruments to do that.
What beauty items do you have in purse right now?
Perfume! I love to wear perfume all day long! Of course at least one fabulous lipstick is in my purse also. I love floral scents such as rose pedals and gardenias. I am very personal about my perfume choices; I don’t like to share that information. I feel that perfume should make your body chemistry. People should take the time to find what they love and not go out to a store to choose what everyone else does. Curators I love are Annick Goutal and Robert Piguet. It makes me feel so feminine and beautiful inside and out. You create your own fragrance when wearing perfume, so try different perfumes that match your chemistry.
