Cara Delevingne. Need we say more? Yes. Because we’ve seen her face in every single magazine and fashion show for over a year now, but we still don’t know much about her. Who is she? Why has she become the It Girl? What does she have that makes her special and wanted by absolutely everybody?
The London native, 20, is not just a model. She’s also an actress (if you’ve seen Anna Karerina, then you’ve seen her as Princess Sorokina) and granddaughter of former English Heritage chairman Sir Jocelyn Stevens. “As usual”, you are probably thinking, “having someone ‘in the business’ makes things easier”… but beware! She has made her fame on her own. In 2009 she signed up with Storm Models agency, and by 2010 she was already walking the spring runway for Clements Ribeiro in London.
In December 2010, she became one the model crew for the Burberry fashion show, then making it as the face for the brand (having elder sister Poppy Delevingne model for this brand before her is a mere coincidence? Hmm…). Since then, and after changing agencies – she is now a DNA Models girl – she has had nothing but invitations everywhere, at a time where her eyebrows were not trendy at all. Perhaps that’s what made her stand out? Not just that. Her young and fresh personality was shown even on the runways, where most models were asked to have a “poker face”. Everybody loved her instantly. She was even named by the Evening Standard as one of “London’s 1,000 Most Influential of 2011″, in the category of “Most Invited”. Because she was invited everywhere. Apparently, Burberry can make miracles!
Fast forward just one year, and you will have Cara as the face of brands like H&M, Victoria’s Secret, Authentic Collection, Dominic Jones Jewellery, Blumarine, Zara and Chanel. She appeared in photoshoots for most of the Vogue magazines around the world, among others. By 2012 she was a regular at catwalks for Moschino, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney, DKNY and Dolce & Gabbana. At this point you started wondering who the heck she was; and why was her face everywhere? She had even created a sort of cult – not by her own willing though – with tons of fans worldwide worshiping her pictures by creating websites and tumblr pages dedicated only to her. How? It is common love for her “irreverent, impish humor” and crossing eyes for pictures (those not work-related, of course) among her followers (half a million on Twitter alone, by the way). She is more than a model. She is also having fun and likes to share it, making her fans part of it (through Instagram, how else?). Rita Ora is her bestie – or “wifey”, as she calls her – and you can frequently see them hanging out; at the Met Gala this year, for example.
Not so long ago, Karl Lagerfield was asked by Elle Magazine why he thought Delevingne was the It Girl. He said, “Cara represents the modern it girl…Cara is different. She’s full of life, full of pep.” And she is often compared to Kate Moss. For starters, she was “discovered” by the same person. Kate was the face everybody wanted in the ‘90s, and now this is happening to Cara. Their beauty is one of a kind.
Winning the ‘Model of the Year’ award last year at the British Fashion Awards and being nominated once more this year, Delevingne is living the dream. And we are happy for her.
