I’m sure designers can agree that it takes hard work and a creative vision to come up with a unique chic shoe. To have that design stolen from you, turned into a cheap copy-cat or imitated is just wrong. Culprits Jessica Simpson and Guess have done just that.
First let’s discuss the Jessica Simpson situation. Simpson was spotted wearing a pair of high-heeled pink strappy sandals in an ad for her self-named clothing and accessories line. What’s the problem you say? Well these shoes look strikingly similar to Christian Louboutins 2010 ‘Staratata’ sandals (pictured on the left) that sold for $995. Simpson’s shoe ‘Evangel’ (pictured on the right) is selling for $95. What’s wrong with this picture? Did Jessica Simpson run out of creative juices?
Next we move on to Guess. Their shoes are looking like a cheap Gucci knockoff.
Gucci (top shoe) and Guess (bottom shoe) are in court over this. According to WWD, Guess’ CEO Paul Marciano took the stand yesterday to defend his brand against Gucci’s knockoff allegations and my, did things get interesting. Marciano, who was questioned for a full four hours, insisted that Guess hadn’t copied Gucci specifically, but had created designs inspired by a multitude of brands that were in fashion at the time. Yeah right.
It’s design theft! Get your own designs.
