Maryland was finally granted recognition for its fashion contributions with the creation of the first annual Fashion Awards, founded and produced by Lana Rae. The Kay Theatre at the University of Maryland College Park became the gathering place for the up and comers in Maryland’s fashion industry. Categories included best accessories, clothing stylist, designer, hair stylist, model, photographer, media blogger, and more. Every aspect of Maryland’s fashion and beauty industries were well represented. It was a day to be remembered!
The show brought all the local talent as well as some celebrities. Miss Maryland Teen USA arrived to present the Best Accessories award. America’s Next Top Model contestant Isis King and television personality Paul Wharton were both given the Industry Award for their contributions to the fashion industry. The audience was also given a treat with a special video message from Nigel Barker who praised Maryland’s fashion and beauty efforts.
The award show was split into two shows, day and evening. The day show opened with a fashion show combined with an African musical performance. Later another fashion show, this time paired with a sizzling performance from Lazer Libby of the group Lazer Bitch, blew up the stage. Lazer Libby’s eye catching blue hair and unique sound paired well with the fashion being featured. Awards given were Best Accessorizer, Stevie Boi, Rising Star, Zaruta E. Reussite, and Emerging Designer, Karen Garalde, among others.
The evening shows opening theme was Chinese New Year. Chinese dragons shimmied their way across the stage as models strutted their stuff. The mid-show fashion event presented more styles to the musical performance of Baltimore’s own Wish. The energy in the room was crackling from the combination of Wish’s animated performance and the fierce fashion being displayed. Finally, the icing on the cake was an Ean Williams’s fashion show set to a stunning violinist who played Top 40 hits like Drake and Rihanna’s “Take Care” and Usher’s “Without You” in a classical way. Williams also received his own Industry award. Awards given were Women’s High Fashion Designer Eve Luzhina-Salazar from Jenkas Fashion, Commercial Hair Stylist, Maurice Fains, and High Fashion Makeup Artist Marcus Miller, among others.
