This year we received a little over 16,000 applications and we are pleased to announce the 2012 Mz Mahogany Chic Fashion Scholarship Recipient is Kadejah Henderson. She attends Buffalo State University in New York where she majors in Fashion Textile and Technology.
“Being a young girl growing up in an urban community and a large family, hand-me-downs were always a part of my wardrobe. Therefore, I always had the passion to be a fashion designer creating clothing for thrift stores, and impoverished communities. Being so close to home, and understanding the very living style of a 7 person family living off of the government and paycheck to paycheck, it is my honor to represent this type of community in the fashion world,” Kadejah tells Mz Mahogany Chic.
Kadejah Henderson is the true representation of the word CHIC! Her experience in the industry ranges from fashion design to styling and modeling. We believe Kadejah has a lot to offer to this industry when she graduates from college.

Daisaku Ikeda one of the 100 most spiritually influential living people in 2012 once said “A great evolution in just one single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a society and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of humankind.” I am attending the State University of New York, at Buffalo because I believe in the idea of first learning how to progress as an individual to in result help the society progress as a whole. Which leads to the question how can one progress if everything in their present surrounding isn’t challenging them to build their craft and skills?
I’ve been told I’m quite humble, wise, mature, relatable and very passionate. However, going through a lot of adversity and poverty every day has brought me to this destination in a unique way. I am the 6th out of 7th child on my mother side and the 4th out of 15th on my father side. I have witnessed my mother pilot from home to home and yet wake up in the morning with intriguing beauty after all of the hardships she has faced from the day before. This is my cup of tea and daily strength every morning I awakened to strive for my dream. For an example, my family navigated from experiencing harsh nights to glorious soulful Sunday evenings all the while, not being able to make ends meet, or even after being denied to stay in a shelter because there wasn’t enough room. If it wasn’t for adversity in my personal life, I wouldn’t have the drive to want to progress and build my craft as a creative mind to become better as one.
Somewhere between then, and now I have learned that crying over my past, not only hinders my growth as a young woman but as a creative mind. In result, I am turning these things around and am beginning to make them positive with continuing my education and building my craft. In short, this scholarship will not only help me achieve my career plans. But it will provide progress with affording my college tuition and being challenged with my dreams, and hopes to become better and help change the world.
CONGRATULATIONS Kadejah Henderson!
