Rising star Elena Goode is as adept at portraying a strong, passionate woman as she is playing a vulnerable and complicated character. This fresh-on-the-scene Puerto Rican beauty is currently starring in the festival hit, Elliot Loves, written and directed by Gary Terracino, and receiving a lot of buzz from critics and fans. Goode grew up in Manhattan and West Harlem as an only child to parents who were both lawyers. Her love of acting began around age 11.
In 2005, a graduate of F.I.T. with an Associate’s degree in fashion design, Goode’s dream became reality, she signed on to play the part of ‘Jade Taylor’ in the CBS daytime hit As the World Turns. When the show came to an end in 2008, she was given the opportunity to grow as an actor and began training at a widely respected Meisner conservatory style two year school in New York City. Upon completion of the program Goode met and signed with Innovative Artists Agency and Ford Models and is well on her way to becoming a serious player in the Hollywood game of film and television. Mz Mahogany Chic caught up with Elena to chat about her career and beauty secrets!
Mz Mahogany: Was acting an instant success for you?
Elena: I think success is measured in how happy you are in what you pursue. So I have felt successful in that way. But auditioning is challenging, you put your heart into what you do and sometimes it’s criticized. But you brush yourself off and continue on. My first break was playing “Jade” on the soap opera ‘As The World Turns’. It was an amazing experience.
Mz Mahogany: Which role was your favorite?
Elena: So far it has to be “Ma” the character I just played in the independent film “Elliot Loves”. She was written with so much dimension and clarity, it was both challenging to play and educating.
Mz Mahogany: If you weren’t an actress, what other profession could you see yourself in?
Elena: I love the ocean and everything in it, maybe a marine biologist.
Mz Mahogany: Let’s talk beauty, do you have a routine?
Elena: I use my Clarasonic spin brush about 3 times a week with Alba botanica pineapple enzyme facial cleanser, afterwards I use Jason pure natural anti-wrinkle day lotion SPF 30 sun screen and sometimes I will throw on Alba Botanica natural sunless tanning lotion on top.
Mz Mahogany: Do you have a favorite beauty product?
Elena: I love to use anything that has a dual function. For example my favorite concealer is Dior Skin Sculpt which lifts and smooths your under eye skin as well as covering any dark circles. I also love Clinique eye shadows, they are rich in pigment but have natural hues so when I’m auditioning there is some punch to the look that isn’t overboard when I step on the street; I love the four color pallet in 102 Spicy. Lastly for the lip, and this does major double duty, I use any of the lip glosses by Fresh, they have SPF 15 and most colors look great on lips and cheeks!
Mz Mahogany: Speaking of lips and cheeks, what do you think about the growing trend of men that dabble in getting cheek implants, botox, liposuction and other work done?
Elena: Mmm on one level it allows men to experience what some women go through. On another level I don’t know that I would be into dating a guy with botox or cheek implants. But overall I think it’s important for anyone man or woman to feel free to do whatever it is they need, as long as it isn’t harming anyone to feel good and confident about their outward appearance.
Mz Mahogany: Do you ever feel pressured to get work done?
Elena: At this point no, and I hope that continues!
Mz Mahogany: You look great! Please tell me how you keep your curls so bouncy and frizz free?
Elena: A lot of experimenting with products! I recently discovered that shampooing my hair was a routine I can go without almost entirely, but when it’s a must I use Ojon damage reverse restorative shampoo.
Mz Mahogany: And when you’re not using shampoo?
Elena: For the times when I want a conditioner to help brush through my hair quickly I use Yes to Carrots pampering conditioner. When I have time I use Ouidad 12 min deep conditioning treatment. For styling my hair I apply Ojon oil and Ouidad’s styling mist setting holding spray.
Mz Mahogany: Are there any hair trends that you admire on other people but are too afraid to try yourself?
Elena: Yes, I love Thandie Newtons high fashion retro bun, but am not sure how to make it happen for myself lol.
Mz Mahogany: What fall fashion trend are you patiently waiting to overindulge in?
Elena: I love the looks from Carlos Miele Fall 2012 show, specifically the South American inspired hats and ponchos. I will definitely be rocking some fun wool wide brimmed hats this fall.
Mz Mahogany: What words of encouragement would tell all aspiring actors and actresses that one day hope to be in your shoes?
Elena: Experiment with yourself creatively. You will be surprised to know your strengths and weakness, embrace them both. Pour your heart into what you do, it might break from time to time but you become more resilient in your endeavors. Know that what you work towards is truly possible!
