As the fashion industry becomes accessible to everyone through social media and the press, smaller cities are taking cues from New York and sponsoring their own fashion weeks. Rochester, NY recently wrapped up its own version of fashion week this past Sunday. I decided to check out Sunday’s show and see if it lived up to standards set by NY and Paris.
Held at the public market, Sunday’s event titled Flavor of Fashion, featured fashions styled by local boutiques and even original designs by local designers. Sitting front row were the Housewives of Rochester while bleacher space was reserved for general admission. Like the ultra exclusive shows of NY, everyone came out dressed in their most impressive outfits.
The show began with local models wearing clothing featured in local boutiques such as Prana Boutique which is also a Yoga studio. Current trends were shown as well as some classic looks. The MC and DJ helped set the mood for the event often dancing to the music and encouraging the models to
“work”. I was quite pleased to see many African American as well as natural hair models. All of the looks were cute and well styled and the models definitely had fun working the runway.
Fashion nerd that I am, my favorite part of the show was when original designs were featured. Rochester has so much talent in terms of designers. It was refreshing to see new and unknown talent. A great collection was shown by Nathaniel’s Originals which featured non traditional menswear which even included a skirt. Each piece was well made and visually interesting.
Flavor of Fashion ended with fun line dancing and light snacks and refreshments. While it was no NYFW, Flavor of Fashion was a great family event that showcased great local businesses and designers. The event was also for a great cause as it sponsored The Center for Youth in Rochester.
