Did you see the recent images on the news of long lines and chaos for a certain sneaker premiere? Although H&M can be just as chaotic, they strive to have a structured plan to launch big designer brands. Based on my personal experience with past designer launches, here is your very own Marni for H&M 2012 Survival Guide.
The Marni for H&M collection is set to hit select H&M stores on March 8th 2012.
#1 Locate an H&M that will have the Marni collection.
This is the most obvious but this is also the most crucial. The collection will launch at select H&M stores, not all. It is imperative that you verify the store will have the collection before you go out there. If you find yourself all alone in front a H&M in the middle of the night then you went to the wrong place.
#2 Get there early
How early? Depends on how bad you want it. The EBay sellers and the fashion obsessed might be there the two days before. This for me is very unrealistic. Get there between midnight and 4am depending on how many H&M’s in the area will have the collection. If you get there and the line is beyond belief, there’s still little hope. This is where the “structure” comes into play.
#3 Get a wristband
Once you take your place in line a guard will come around every once in a while to hand out color coded wrist bands. Although you are standing in a line, when the store opens, they let the maximum capacity in. BUT this doesn’t mean who ever pushes their way to the front gets all the stuff. The colored wristband puts you in a group of 20. Each group is designated 15 minutes in the “box” (a closed off section of the H&M store where the Marni collection is located) at a designated time. So while you are standing in line, bonding, and sharing personal stories with a stranger, that is the person you will be going toe-to-toe with in the “box”.
#4 Check the weather
This is a world-wide event so unfortunately I can’t provide a weather forecast. If it’s cold, bring a snuggie and hot coco. If it’s going to rain bring an umbrella. Tame your excitement and use common sense.
#5 Bring a Snack
You will be out there for hours! Bring a light snack and bottled water. It’s easier to pack your items for #4 & #5 into a book bag that you can strap on when you get in the “box”. Your hands must be free to grab and go!
#6 Don’t wear heels!
This one wasn’t so obvious to the girls trying to look cute for the launch. After 2 hours of standing in heels and miniskirts they learned their lesson. By the 5th hour they were full of regret. By the time H&M opened they were walking like they broke their ankles. Heels are cute but not for this event.
#7 Don’t be late for your “box” time
You can’t believe how many people missed their “box” time because they was roaming around the store. SMH! Make your way toward the “box” at least 15-20 minutes before your time. This will also help you to be first in your group’s line.
#8 Know your size
This is not going to be situation where you stroll into H&M and try on a size until something fits. Know your size! You have one chance to get it right. Yes you will have the opportunity to try your items on after the 15 minutes but if you don’t make your purchase it goes right back into the “box”. The luxury of peeping your head out of the fitting room for an attendant to get you a different size is gone.
#9 Know your budget
Ok, so you got there extra early and are in one of the first groups to be in the “box”. Yay! Don’t grab $1000 worth of merchandise if you only have $248.06 left in the bank. Layaway and hold are make believe words for this event. I remember seeing a guy crying in a corner because his card declined when he tried to purchase the Versace leather jacket. The best thing to do is create a list of things you want, the sizes you need, and the total cost.
#10 Have Fun!
There’s no need to push or cut the line. That kind of stuff can get you your very own silver wristband to the slammer. Last I checked they don’t have Marni in jail.
Here’s the entire collection. Print this survival guide and practice in the mirror (lol).
