After a decade plus reign at one of the world’s most influential and innovative fashion houses, Nicolas Ghesquière has stepped down as creative director at Balenciaga to be replaced by none other than Alexander Wang himself!
Successful in his own right, Wang is celebrated for his contemporary street-wear style, and is a celeb favorite. Balenciaga, under the guidance of Ghesquière, had experienced 15 years of creative and avant-garde fashion, bringing a new light and direction to the 100-year-old brand. Now, with the inclusion of Wang, the brand is furthering their fresh and ingenious design by broadening and appealing to a younger crowd, as well as capitalizing on Wang’s successful track record in creating luxurious (as well as extremely popular) accessories.
If accessories are the aim, Balenciaga is on the right track with Wang. Besides being known for fashions that border on functionality and artistry, Balenciaga is noted for its accessories. Before “it” bags became the norm in pop culture, Balenciaga was leading the pack with its ever-popular “Motorcycle” bags.
Not to be outdone, Wang has created his own buzzed-about bags, more notably the studded “Rocco” bags. Seen on the arms of some of Hollywood’s fashionable young stars, the bag reached cult status quickly, becoming in its own right an “it” bag.
Quality meets minimalism is the common thread with both Wang and Balenciaga. Wang taking over the reigns marks a significant recruitment of a high-profile American designer to a major European fashion house.
With two different fashion houses underscored by common edginess and vulnerability, this merger can only mean new amazing things for the future, and we can’t wait to see what Wang + Balenciaga will bring!
