Luxury label Maison Martin Margiela can now officially call itself a “haute couture house.” On Tuesday, the fashion house was given an official haute couture appellation by French fashion’s governing body, the Chambre Syndicale. The label will become number 14 of the small list of fashion houses with the appellation which ncludes Dior and Chanel. There are also five correspondent members and 11 guest members.
Certain specifications must be met to achieve official haute couture status. This includes the number of looks shown per show, the size of the atelier, whether or not two collections are shown per year as well as the quality and standard of the pieces produced.
Previously, Margiela showed their couture collection as a ‘correspondent member’. Maison Martin Margiela only debuted its couture collection in July of this year. The couture appellation means a great deal to Maison Martin Margiela as well as H&M, who did a collaboration with the haute couture house earlier this year.
Margiela’s first show will take place on January 23, 2013.
