Mz Mahogany: Your hair looks really healthy. What is your current hair care regimen?
Jennifer: Thank you! On a daily basis I really try to keep it simple. If I’m not working or attending an event I do the minimum amount possible while still keeping it cute & stylish. There are so many styles that you can wear without having a curling iron in sight! My regulars are a side bun, a side ponytail, parted down the middle with two side buns, two pig tails, a high bun, a regular pony tail & just plain old straight down.
My regular hair care regimen really takes place on a weekly basis. I wash it once a week. I alternate the products a bit. Right now I’m using a really great, inexpensive & 100% organic line called Ion. I use the moisturizing shampoo on most weeks & the moisturizing conditioner. I alternate this line with the Cream of Nature moisturizing conditioning shampoo which is an all in one shampoo & conditioner. About once a month I’ll use the Ion clarifying shampoo to take out all of the build up that can form in our hair, followed with either the Ion reconstructor treatment or the hard water conditioner. Here in LA the water is very hard which can be harsh on the hair. Once I’m done with the washing process, I always use a good leave in conditioner/detangler.
I blow dry my hair straight with an ionic blow dryer that has various size comb attachments. After this I top off my hair with a little bit of spray on Mink oil & voila….I’m all set! Also when it’s getting really close to the time for my next relaxer I have a tendency to use an electric hot comb on just the roots around the front & back and/or I use a product called the MaxiGlide. This product is awesome!! It’s like a flat iron with little tiny bristles. It has a little water case in it. You use it like a flat iron, except you press the steam button as you go down the shaft of the hair. The steam is so much healthier on your hair & it gets it really straight. I love it!
Mz Mahogany: Do you do anything different at night or when you’re on the road working?
Jennifer: At night I have a tendency to use silk or satin pillow cases. Because of the simple styles & regular maintenance that I do, I’m pretty much able to keep the same routine when I’m working & when I travel. I do have a tendency when I’m working to ask the stylist to use the minimum amount of products possible to achieve the look that they need. This way my hair is not subject to too many chemicals that I would not normally use.
Mz Mahogany: Is your hair natural or chemically straightened?
Jennifer: My hair is chemically straightened with a no lye relaxer which I get done every 6 to 7 weeks. At the midpoint in between relaxers I will usually go in to my hairdresser for a deep conditioning & blow dry.
Mz Mahogany: Do you remember when you got your first perm?
Jennifer: Ha Ha! Yes! I remember getting my first relaxer for sure. I was 10 years old. Young…..yes, but I think that my mom finally decided that she didn’t want to see me crying anymore when she tried to comb out my long & extremely tangled hair!! Those old products like “No More Tears” just didn’t work & weren’t meant for my hair type!! So, therefore my first relaxer came into being! I remember loving how straight my hair was, but being in tears over the fact that the hairdresser had cut off a significant amount of my hair, so it was bittersweet really. With the exception of a very short period of time, I’ve had a relaxer ever since.
Mz Mahogany: Would you ever go natural?
Jennifer: In regards to that “short period of time”, I decided at one point to let my hair grow out into it’s natural state…a difficult process in itself which requires a lot of care in coming out of a relaxer. It finally got to the point where it was long enough for me to cut off & wear in a cute shorter style. I soon discovered however, that I really don’t have the kind of hair that forms into that cute kinky curly look. No…..not me. Mine looked more like a Q-Tip on acid! Just frizzy. LOL This made it very hard for me to do a cute style myself. You would think that being natural would be much more of a low maintenance thing, but for my hair a relaxer is actually much lower maintenance which is my preference for the time being. So, I’ve gone back to a relaxer. That’s my story & I’m sticking to it!!
Mz Mahogany: What are you favorite hair products?
1) A Soft & Beautiful no lye relaxer kit
2) Cream of Nature conditioning moisturizing shampoo
3) My Maxi Glide flatiron
4) An ionic blow-dryer with attachment combs
Mz Mahogany: What is your daily skincare regimen and what products do you use?
Jennifer: I’ve been using the same products every since I started a skin care regimen as a teenager. I use a Lancôme cleanser, toner & lotion. Lancôme also has a gentle facial scrub brush to which I apply the cleanser which helps to exfoliate. I also use the Bath & Body Works lotions everyday on my entire body for smooth & supple overall skin. Hair & skin care is not just all about the physical care of those parts. It’s also important for me to take a good multi-vitamin twice a day and drink a lot of water. I haven’t quite mastered the workout thing, but I’m workin’ on it!! lol
Mz Mahogany: Your make-up is usually on the natural side, is that your preference?
Jennifer: Yes, natural is definitely my preference. I do wear make-up pretty much every day, but when I’m not working or attending an event, I wear very little. On a light day, I’ll just wear blush & a lip gloss. On a heavier day I’ll wear blush on my cheeks & eyes, eyeliner, lipstick & lip gloss. Possibly even a bit of powder to take the shine down. The only time I wear a lot of bold make up is for a shoot or an event if it’s done by a make-up artist. If you take care of your face with a good regimen I see nothing wrong with makeup. I actually really love make-up. I’m just not very good at doing my own!!
Mz Mahogany: Great tips! Are you currently working on anything?
Jennifer: I just finished a film called “The Ghosts of Los Angeles” with British director Richard Carroll in which I play a character by the name of Cricket. I currently have an Exxon-Mobil commercial airing, as well as print campaigns for Delta Sky Club & HealthNet.
Jennifer sponsors a charity called the North Shore Animal League which does the important work of saving & caring for thousands of animal lives every year. Thanks Jennifer for sharing your tips with me and my readers!
